The votes have been tallied, the debates have raged on, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has officially announced its Class of 2026! If you’re a fan of the other side of the pond, you are in luck—this year’s lineup features a massive British presence, alongside some long-overdue corrections for heavy metal, post-punk, and hip-hop.
Let’s break down the artists heading to Cleveland this November, the icons getting special recognition, and the nominees who were left out in the cold.
The Class of 2026: Performer Inductees
This year’s main category features eight incredibly diverse acts spanning jazz-pop, heavy metal, rap, and Britpop.
- Phil Collins: He is officially a two-time Hall of Famer! Already inducted as a member of Genesis, Collins is finally being recognized for his titanically successful solo career.
- Billy Idol: With his signature punk sneer and undeniable pop sensibilities, Idol brought rebellion to the MTV generation and is rightfully claiming his spot.
- Iron Maiden: It is about time! After years of egregious snubs and fan outcry, the trailblazers of the new wave of British heavy metal are finally getting their due.
- Joy Division/New Order: Inducted as a single, combined unit, this honors the dark, pioneering post-punk genius of Ian Curtis and the band’s subsequent evolution into synth-pop royalty.
- Oasis: Britpop has officially entered the chat. The recently reunited Gallagher brothers are Hall of Famers (let’s just hope they can share the stage peacefully at the induction ceremony).
- Sade: The ultimate smooth operator. Sade brings a necessary dose of soulful, jazz-inflected pop to this year’s class.
- Luther Vandross: The late, great vocal powerhouse and R&B legend gets in on his first nomination.
- Wu-Tang Clan: First-time nominees bringing Da Ruckus to the Hall. Their game-changing 1993 debut reshaped hip-hop forever, making them a no-brainer for induction.
Special Category Honorees
The Rock Hall isn’t just about the main performers. The 2026 class also includes some massive names in the special categories:
- Early Influence Award: Hip-hop pioneers Queen Latifah and MC Lyte, Cuban salsa legend Celia Cruz, Afrobeat creator Fela Kuti, and country-rock trailblazer Gram Parsons.
- Musical Excellence Award: Super-producer Rick Rubin, songwriter Linda Creed, and legendary producers Arif Mardin and Jimmy Miller.
- Ahmet Ertegun Award: Ed Sullivan, whose legendary Sunday night variety show was the launchpad for countless rock and pop acts in the 1950s and 60s.
The “Wait Till Next Year” Club: The 2026 Snubs
When you have a ballot stacked with 17 massive names and only 8 performer slots, heartbreak is inevitable. The voters cleared a lot of historical backlog this year (like Iron Maiden), but it came at the expense of several heavy hitters.
Nominees Why the Snub Hurts
| Mariah Carey | Nominated multiple times now, the Songbird Supreme and undisputed queen of the Billboard Hot 100 is inexplicably still waiting for her induction. |
| Lauryn Hill | The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of the most important albums of the 90s, but it wasn’t enough to push her through on this year’s ballot. |
| INXS | The late Michael Hutchence and crew ruled the late 80s rock charts, but they are still searching for that Hall of Fame sensation. |
| Jeff Buckley | His 1994 debut Grace remains a critical masterpiece, but the voters ultimately passed on honoring the late icon this time around. |
| Shakira | The ultimate crossover queen, who successfully bridged Latin music with global pop-rock, will have to wait another year. |
| The Black Crowes | With their recent reunion, the timing felt perfect for the Robinson brothers to get in, but they missed the final cut. |
| Pink | A massive, acrobatic powerhouse of modern rock-pop who was completely overlooked on her first appearance on the ballot. |
| Melissa Etheridge | The two-time Grammy-winning heartland rocker was passed over despite a wildly influential catalog. |
| New Edition | The pioneers of the modern R&B boy band blueprint will have to hold out hope for a future ballot. |
The 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on November 14th. Until then, we can officially start arguing about who deserves to be on the 2027 ballot!
